Who will be the Premier League’s Surprise Package This Season?

At the start of every season we all sit down and make our predictions for the upcoming campaign.

Who is going to win the league? Who is destined for relegation? What will the top four look like? However, every season, a team pulls itself apart and receives plaudits for defying everyone’s expectations.

That said, the opposite can occur also, when a team expected to excel disappears from the radar in an alarming slump (Chelsea two years ago anyone?).

However, making pre-season predictions is all part of the fun as we take a look at a host of teams who could shock us all with their performances in 2017/18.

Huddersfield Town

Most people have written off little ‘Town’ before they have even kicked a ball. However, with an opening day trip to Crystal Palace, placing a wager on the next match is an unknown quantity for a side many predicted to struggle in the Championship Prior to securing promotion.

Head coach David Wagner performed somewhat of a miracle last season and there is reason to believe he can do it again and not just keep the Terriers up, but do so comfortably.

Having already broken their club record fee on the signing of Porto striker Laurent Depoitre, Huddersfield are going to make a real fist of it in the Premier League.

They may be relegation favourites but so were Burnley last season.

Most Likely Finish – 20th

Surprise Finish – 15th

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs are riding the crest of a wave under Mauricio Pochettino and are enjoying their strongest campaigns in the top flight for years.

However, they are still yet to win anything and with a host of clubs sniffing around their best players, Tottenham have the potential to be that side that falls into a slump.

If Spurs lose Kane to Manchester United, it is hard to see where the goals will come from and a home campaign in Wembley (where they failed so miserably in the Champions League last season) all post potential threats to Tottenham’s title aspirations let alone staying in the top four.

Most Likely Finish – Top 4

Surprise Finish – 8th

AFC Bournemouth

The Cherries have a lot going for them this new campaign, arguably the best young manager in the league in Eddie Howe, the ability to attract reasonably big names despite having the smallest ground in the division and multiple new sponsorship deals allowing them some power in the transfer market.

Bournemouth have a likeability that makes them popular with everyone and there is the feeling on the South coast that they are now ready to push onto the next level.

If they can land John Terry, then that will be a huge coup for the club and with Eddie Howe’s style of play attracting plenty of plaudits, there is every reason to believe that after two years establishing themselves, now is the time to assault the top half of the table on a regular occurrence.

Likely Finish – Mid-Table

Surprise Finish – Top 6
