Three Southend Players Who Can Help Them Win the League Two Play Off Final
Southend face Wycombe at Wembley on Saturday for the chance to win promotion to League One. Both sides narrowly missed out on automatic promotion in the regular season, but have come through the play-offs to meet in a one-off encounter.
Phil Brown has enjoyed Wembley success already as a manager, guiding Hull into the Premier League back in 2008, and hopes his key players will turn up for the show-piece occasion.
He has helped Southend reach this stage by assembling a sturdy defence, although the Shrimpers possess a threat in all areas. Here are three of their most important players who are most likely to stand out on Saturday evening.
Goalkeeper Bentley has been attracting attention from teams in the Football League and Premier League all season due to his outstanding reflexes and decision making. The Essex keeper has broken all sorts of records this year as he looks to make the step up the leagues with his local club.
At just 21, Bentley is likely to go far in the game if he builds on what he has already learnt. Leeds and West Ham have been reportedly linked with him so Southend could lose him if they are unsuccessful this weekend.
Bentley had kept 10 straight home clean sheets prior to the play-off with Stevenage, building on his 19 from last season. Wycombe won’t find it easy getting past the young stopper and his organised defence on Saturday that’s for sure. (Click ‘next’ below to see more!)
