Three Men Who Can Fire Wycombe to Glory in the League Two Play Off Final

Updated: May 21, 2015

Wycombe Wanderers will make the short trip to North London to face Southend this Saturday evening for the right to play in League One next season. The Chairboys eventually saw off the challenge of Plymouth in the semi-finals, and will be more prepared for Saturday having not had to contend with extra-time.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men won both legs against Plymouth, though did suffer a slight scare by conceding two late goals in the 3-2 victory at Home Park. However, 2-1 win at Adams Park thanks to goals from Paul Hayes and Alfie Mawson eased them to Wembley.

Like Southend, Wycombe had been in pole position before blowing the opportunity to go up automatically right at the end of the season. Having finished ahead of Southend on goal difference, Wycombe will be hoping a possible victory is by a greater and more comfortable margin.

Sam Saunders

Far too classy for this level, Brentford loanee Saunders is working his way back up the divisions after a nightmare year. A knee injury has kept the midfielder out of Brentford’s promotion-challenging side for ages, a real shame for a man who was integral in helping them gain promotion last season.

A set-piece expert, Wycombe have relished having someone of his experience aid their depleted squad as the season wears on. His potency from free-kicks could prove to be the difference on Saturday, or his supply line to Paul Hayes which is first-class for League Two standards. A major dangerman on what could prove to be his final Wycombe appearance should they not gain promotion. (Click ‘next’ below to see the other two men who can beat Southend!)
