Three Goalkeepers Man United Could Target if David De Gea Departs
De Gea has been United’s best player for the past two seasons and comfortably the division’s best goalkeeper, so it would take a hefty transfer fee to prize him from Old Trafford.
As such a major presence in an unbalanced United defence, a suitable replacement would need to be found. Here are three potential targets United scouts may be surveying.
The Chelsea man is available, though not to anyone in the Premier League. However, United will hope to chew on the ears of those at Stamford Bridge to convince them to take one of the league’s best goalkeepers and give him what he wants – regular football. Chelsea did let Juan Mata join United but seem reluctant to let Cech depart in the same direction. Whatever happens, United represent a club the size of one Cech wishes to play at, and may find the urge to push a move through if no one else comes in.
If De Gea does join Real Madrid and Iker Casillas is demoted to the bench, then that leaves Costa Rican star Navas as third-choice. Far too good to be second fiddle to Casillas anyway, Navas would surely be moved on if the Spanish captain isn’t. This could be included in the clause for De Gea, and Navas may find himself in the Premier League. Despite a mistake at the weekend, Navas has more than enough quality and determination to thrive in England.
France skipper Lloris is far too good to be playing Europa League football for another season, and may be tempted to act up if United come calling. His reflexes have had the Premier League in awe for his few seasons in England, and clearly has the mentality to do well at United as he carries the armband for his country. A move would also work out well for him if Victor Valdes remains, as the ex-Barca stopper could take on European games in a tandem-approach favoured by both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid this season. Though having seen Spurs’ transfer dealings over the past few years, Lloris will not be the cheap acquisition.
