Football Republik best tweets of 2018

Social media has impacted our beautiful game in a way we never thought possible. Thanks to channels such as Twitter and Facebook we are given a more detailed insight into what players do away from the pitch.

However, the effect of allowing players access to their own army of followers (often exceeding the millions for the world class minority) is that one slip is pounced upon with a vengeance by a baying mob.

That said, the opposite is also true with players able to show off their passion for the club they represent and thank the fans directly which was never possible before and show a humility many believe these high paid stars lacked.

The team at SBO.net took the arduous task of rifling through the most frequent tweeters of 2017 with Everton’s Yannick Bolasie topping the list sending a healthy 474 tweets throughout the year (see the list below).

With this in mind, we wanted to take a look at some of the top football tweets early doors in 2018.

Paul Gascoigne

Gazza is back and just like he tore apart Scotland’s defence at Euro 96, he is now dominating Twitter.

The troubled former England star is a laugh a minute on social media posting daily jokes as well as plenty of playing days memories.

However, it is this epic tweet taking the micky out of former Scotland defender Colin Hendry for THAT Euro 96 chip which is one of the tweets of the year so far.

However, Hendry did get his own back reminding Gazza that he at least has a Premier League winners medal that the great Geordie does not.

West Bromwich Albion – Cyrille Regis

59 is far too young to be taken away but when the devastating news broke of Cyrille Regis’s passing in the middle of January, the footballing community was in tears.

Regis is best known for his time at West Bromwich Albion where he will forever be a cult hero. Regis was also capped five times for England and was the third black player to be capped by the Three lions.

After over 250 appearances for the Baggies it was no surprise that the Hawthorns was a sombre place and the club themselves summed up the love everyone associated with West Bromwich felt for the man with this simple tweet.

Leeds United Unveil New Badge

In a bid to be more in tune with the fans, Championship side Leeds United unveiled a new badge they thought would propel the club into the modern era with aplomb.

However, this did not quite go to plan with football fans all around the world immediately taking to twitter to trounce the new design with one fan even liking it to a ‘Gaviscon advert’.

After much ridicule and a petition side by over 50,000 Leeds fans, the board have promised to have another go after it seems six months and 10,000 people does not get you much creativity these days.

Here’s the offending tweet.
