1Spurs and England winger Andros Townsend could be used as bait to lure Aston Villa and Belgium striker Christian Benteke to White Hart Lane.

Reports emerging today from The Mirror suggest that Spurs could lose Townsend as the club looks to reduce Benteke’s £32.5m release clause.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood, who worked with many of Spurs’ youngsters during his time at the club, would know all about the England winger and may tempt the club to accept a bid from Spurs. Townsend started for England during yesterday’s 3-2 win over Slovenia, though failed to impress.

The North London club are looking to bring in a striker this summer after Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor flopped last season, and are also hoping to reduce the pressure on Harry Kane’s shoulders.

Benteke, who scored 15 times last season as Villa survived relegation and made it to the FA Cup Final, is in high demand though his clause has put many suitors off. Daniel Levy will be hoping to use Townsend as a makeweight and reduce the outlay for the strong Belgian international.

There is currently a strong Belgian contingent at Spurs with Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli and Moussa Dembele flying the Flemish flag. Benteke would only strengthen that powerful trio further.

Should Townsend make the switch, Sherwood could find himself overloaded with wingers having recently signed Scott Sinclair from Manchester City. Alongside forwards Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann, Sherwood also has exciting youngster Jack Grealish, Carles Gil, Charles N’Zogbia and Kieran Richardson on the books at Villa Park.
