Newcastle United decided against making a swoop for Chelsea’s deadline day signing Papy Djilobodji, according to reports from the Chronicle.

Chelsea made a £4million swoop for central defender Papy Djilobodji from Nantes on deadline day and the transfer certainly left quite a few people surprised.

Nonetheless, Djilobodji is a quality defender and he could well prove to be an astute bargain purchase for the Blues.

Now in further surprise reports regarding Djilobodji, it has been claimed that both Newcastle United and Sunderland were offered the chance to sign the defender just days before Chelsea made their move but the North East duo decided against taking up the opportunity.

Newcastle not deciding to sign Djilobodji certainly comes as a surprise as the Magpies were in the market to sign a new central defender and at just £4million, the Senegalese international could well have been a risk worth taking.
