ESPN is reporting that Newcastle United have triggered the release clause for Hull City’s Mohammed Diame.

The Tigers are in turmoil at the moment with Steve Bruce walking out on them a week ago, citing lack of transfer funds as a key reason for quiting.

Rafa Benitez has orchestrated a move for the Senegalese international with a £4.5m offer allowing the midfielder to talk to the Spaniard about a move to St James Park.

Diame has been at Hull since 2014, joining the club from West Ham United and scored the winning goal in last season’s Play-Off final at Wembley. The Tigers have offered Diame a new contract so a move to Newcastle is by no means certain.

It was one of ten goals that the midfielder scored for Hull in the Championship and suggests that Diame is seen as the ideal replacement for Moussa Sissoko. Benitez commented that “no satisfactory offers” have so far been received for the want-away French international but the expectation is that he will still leave this transfer window.
