1Newcastle United are hoping to complete a deal for Wolfsburg and Netherlands striker Bas Dost according to The Mirror. Dost would become Steve McClaren’s first signing as manager of the Magpies.

McClaren, who used to manage Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, signalled his intent from his unveiling as Newcastle boss last week, claiming he wanted to bring a ‘proper number 9 back to the club’. Dutchman Dost, 26, would be ideal as a targetman due to his 6ft 5in frame.

Reports claim that the deal, worth around £9 million, could be completed this week. Dost would sign a four-year deal with the club and link up with former Bundesliga hitman Papiss Cisse.

As part of a superb Wolfsburg side last year, Dost hit 16 goals as they qualified for the Champions League and finished second. Dost also scored in Wolfsburg’s German Cup success over Dortmund.

He earned his first two caps for the Netherlands in march following an incredible run of form, crashing in 14 goals in just 9 games, including four against Bayer Leverkusen.

Should Dost finalise a move to the Premier League, he would link up with fellow Dutchmen Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Vurnon Anita and Siem de Jong at St. James’ Park.
