Aston Villa and Newcastle are planning a surprise move for former Bayern Munich striker Ivica Olic, according to reports from the Birmingham Mail

Aston Villa have done well in the transfer market by securing the services of the likes of Aaron Tshibola, Pierluigi Gollini and Tommy Elphick so far this summer and now manager Roberto Di Matteo is looking to strengthen his attacking lineup.

For Newcastle the story is much the same – experienced attackers Dwight Gayle as well as Matt Ritchie have joined the ranks at the Toon Army although evidence suggests manager Rafa Benitez may rival Villa for this cultured forward.

Villa have been linked with high profile names such as Ross McCormack, Dwight Gayle (now at the Magpies of course) and Islam Slimani this summer but the Championship outfit seem to have been priced out of a move for the aforementioned trio.

Di Matteo is looking at other targets at the moment and according to reports from the Birmingham Mail, the Italian boss is considering a shock swoop for veteran striker Ivica Olic.

Olic was released by Hamburg at the end of last season and it has been claimed that Villa are ready to take a chance on the 36-year-old this summer.
